O Queer Lisboa, festival de cinema gay e lésbico da capital portuguesa, abandonou o patrocínio que desde há muito lhe era prestado pela Embaixada Israelita, na sequência de uma persistente campanha de activistas que lutam pelo boicote de Israel até que este cumpra as suas obrigações à luz do direito internacional e respeite os direitos humanos dos palestinianos. A embaixada israelita vinha apoiando o festival ao longo dos últimos anos como parte da sua campanha “Brand Israel”, lançada em 2005 com o objectivo de desviar a atenção da sua contínua violação do direito internacional e direitos palestinianos, para os seus feitos artísticos e científicos.
Uma coligação de organizações portuguesas, incluindo o colectivo pelos direitos LGBT “Panteras Rosa” e o Comité de Solidariedade com a Palestina, protestou à porta do evento no ano passado exigindo que a organização do festival rejeitasse aquele patrocínio imoral. Os protestos tiveram alguma cobertura mediática pondo em causa o festival. O realizador canadiano John Greyson abandonou sua participação no festival após saber do patrocínio. Numa declaração, Greyson, que havia sido galardoado com a maior honra do Festival em 2009, afirmou que “Tanto os activistas queer portugueses como palestinianos fizeram ver que este apoio viola o apelo feito em 2005 pela sociedade civil palestiniana que pede aos artistas e académicos de consciência que boicotem o estado israelita, em protesto contra a ocupação corrente.”
Sérgio Vitorino, porta-voz das “Panteras Rosa” referiu que “Israel usa os eventos queer para fazer “pinkwash” [branqueamento rosa] do apartheid, desviando as atenções da opressão que exerce sobre os palestinianos assim como da verdadeira homofobia com que se confronta a comunidade LGBT dentro de Israel e qualquer gay ou lésbica palestiniano a viver debaixo de uma brutal ocupação militar.” Sérgio acrescenta “Felicitamos a decisão do Queer Lisboa abandonar este patrocínio para que possamos continuar a celebrar a verdadeira mensagem do festival – a da igualdade e da tolerância.”
A campanha Boicote, Desinvestimento e Sanções (BDS) foi lançada em 2009 por uma coligação plural que inclui organizações de solidariedade, direitos humanos e anti-racismo, em resposta a um apelo feito pela maioria da sociedade civil palestiniana em 2005. 'Queer Lisboa' drops Israeli sponsorship following boycott campaign

Portugal - 'Queer Lisboa', Lisbon's gay and lesbian film festival, dropped its long-standing sponsorship from the Israeli Embassy following a sustained campaign by activists advocating for the boycott of Israel until it abides by its obligations under international law and respects Palestinian human rights. The Israeli embassy has sponsored the festival for the past many years as part of its "Brand Israel" campaign launched in 2005, which aims to divert attention from Israel's violations of international law and Palestinian rights to its artistic and scientific achievements.
A coalition of Portuguese pro-justice organizations, which include queer-rights group "Panteras Rosa" and the Portuguese Committee for Solidarity with Palestinians have picketed the event in the past three years demanding that the organizers drop the immoral sponsorship. The protests were widely covered in the Portuguese media bringing the festival into disrepute. Last year, Canadian filmmaker John Greyson withdrew his participation from the Portuguese festival after learning of the sponsorship. In a statement Greyson, who had been awarded the highest accolade of the festival in 2009, said "taking this money violates the 2004 Palestinian civil society call for artists and academics to boycott the State of Israel in protest of its occupation of Palestinian lands"
Sérgio Vitorino, a spokesperson for "Panteras Cor de Rosa" said, "Israel uses queer events to 'pinkwash' apartheid, diverting attention from its oppression of Palestinians as well as the real homophobia confronted by the LGBT community inside Israel and by lesbian or gay Palestinian living under a brutal military occupation." Vitorino added, "We praise the decision of Queer Lisboa to drop this sponsorship so we can now proceed with celebrating the true message of this festival, one of equality and tolerance."
The Portuguese Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign begun in 2009 by a diverse coalition that includes solidarity, human rights and anti-racism organizations in response to a unified appeal by the majority of Palestinian civil society in 2005.
